How it works
How the Golden Ratio Calculator works
The Golden Ratio (approximately 1.618) is a mathematical concept that has been used in art, architecture, and design for centuries because it is believed to create aesthetically pleasing compositions. When applied to web design, the Golden Ratio can help achieve a visually balanced and harmonious layout between images and text.
The calculator compares the aspect ratios of the image and the text area with the Golden Ratio. By recommending the dimensions closest to the Golden Ratio, it suggests a balanced layout that could be visually appealing to users. However, the Golden Ratio is just a guideline, and you should consider other factors such as content, user experience, and the overall design of your website.
Using the image mode
Drop a photo, a screenshot of a layout or a logo onto the panel. The phi grid divides the frame at 38.2% and 61.8% on each axis; the places where those lines cross are where a composition tends to feel settled. The spiral traces the golden rectangles inward, and Mirror flips both so you can test the other orientation. The golden crop figures tell you the nearest dimensions that would make the frame itself golden.
Golden Ratio Calculator questions
What is the golden ratio?
About 1.618, written as phi. Divide a line so the whole is to the longer part as the longer part is to the shorter, and you get it. A rectangle with sides in that ratio can be split into a square and another golden rectangle forever, which is where the spiral comes from.
How does the calculator decide which side to recommend?
It works out the width-to-height ratio of your image and of your text area, measures how far each sits from 1.618, and recommends golden dimensions for whichever is already closer. The suggested height is simply the width divided by phi.
What does the image mode do?
Drop in any image and it is drawn in your browser with a phi grid or a golden spiral over the top, so you can see where the strong points of the composition fall. It also reports the image’s ratio, how far from golden it is, and the nearest golden crop. The image never leaves your device.
Should every layout follow the golden ratio?
No. It is a guideline that often produces balanced proportions, not a law. Content, reading order, screen size and what the page needs to do all matter more. Use it as a starting point, then trust your eye.
